The Grooming Experience

A compassionate approach to your dog’s grooming needs!

For certain breeds of dogs, grooming is an unavoidable experience. It is also an experience they will have to go through for their entire lives. At A Walk in the Park, we recognize that grooming is also essential for dogs to be healthy and happy. A dog that requires regular grooming but does not receive it is subject to a variety of skin injuries and illnesses. It is important to us that the grooming process is safe for both the groomer and the dog. In order to achieve this, we approach grooming with compassion and understanding. It can be a scary process for your dog, especially if he or she has had negative grooming experiences in the past.

We try to take our time with your dog and allow them to take breaks as needed. We will never force a dog to participate in the grooming process, especially if it poses a danger to the dog or groomer. Instead, we will work with you to identify the parts of the process that the dog struggles with and try to work within the dog’s comfort zone through the experience.

We can offer training to complement the grooming to help your dog become more comfortable and hopefully learn to enjoy the experience! We also want to start puppies off right, when we have the chance to do so. We offer a start-up package to slowly introduce your puppy to the various aspects of the grooming process to slowly acclimate them. We also offer lots of treats, toys, play, and praise during these times with the groomer to help your puppy look forward to their time with us!

An added benefit to utilizing A Walk in the Park for your dog’s other care needs, is that you can add grooming services, from nail trims to full service grooms, to your daycare or overnight reservation so that your dog comes home smelling fresh and looking sharp! Entrusting your dog to us means that you can have peace of mind that your dog is loved and well-cared for when you are not able to provide the care yourself. The only other place you will need is your veterinarian!

How can Enrichment help dogs during the grooming process?

Slide 1

There are several kinds of enrichment that our groomers provide to dogs to make the grooming process easier and less stressful.

Our groomers use treats to reward dogs for good behavior during the grooming process. Positive reinforcement helps dogs associate grooming with something positive, making them more likely to be cooperative and relaxed.

Sometimes our groomers provide a toy or chew to keep the dog occupied during grooming can help distract them from the grooming process and reduce anxiety.

Our groomers use aromatherapy or essential oils to create a calming environment. Lavender and chamomile are popular scents that can help soothe dogs. We also use Adaptil diffusers in our facility. Adaptil releases a synthetic version of the appeasing hormone, that helps a number of dogs with their anxiety.

Playing calming music or white noise can help create a relaxing atmosphere for the dog.

Our groomers can use massage techniques to help the dog relax and feel more comfortable during grooming.

Providing a quick walk or play session before grooming can help tire the dog out and reduce anxiety.

Our groomers can work with dogs to help them become more comfortable with the grooming process. This can include desensitization training, where the dog is gradually exposed to grooming tools and procedures in a controlled and positive manner.

By incorporating these enrichment techniques, our groomers can help your dog feel more comfortable and less stressed during the grooming process.
